Abiotic Factor Mushroom Peccary: Mushrooms, Skull & Pet Harvest

Find Mushroom Peccaries, harvest a farm skull, tame or mutate a pet, and collect its renewable Carbuncle Mushroom without killing it.

Looking for the wild creature

Look in Cascade Laboratories and the Mycofields, including fungal replacements during Spore Events. Search for fungal Peccaries while moving through those areas.

If your goal is the material rather than the encounter, compare the alternatives on the Carbuncle Mushroom page.

Looking for renewable mushrooms

What you wantWhich interaction mattersDo not confuse it with
A Mushroom Peccary SkullHarvesting the creature’s remainsThe produce prompt on a living pet
Mushrooms from an encounterHarvesting the correct fungal creature’s remainsDrops from an ordinary Peccary
Recurring mushrooms from a petIts living Harvest interactionKilling the pet for corpse drops

Choose the goal first. A list of harvestable corpse drops is not a list of everything the pet can produce while alive.

A deployed or bedded Mushroom Peccary grows a mushroom. Collect it when the Harvest prompt appears.

This is not the same as harvesting a corpse. Do not destroy a tamed creature to collect a recurring resource.

Do you need a Mushroom Farm too?

A Mushroom Farm is a separate deployable with its own water and lighting conditions. Do not apply the farm’s placement rules to a pet just because both can produce mushrooms.

How to tame or create a Mushroom Peccary pet

Choose a route:

Starting creatureSuppliesSequence
Wild Mushroom PeccaryPheromone Flask and 3 Antewheat, Nachos or BreadPacify with the flask, then feed the taming food
Already tamed normal Peccary3 Carbuncle MushroomsFeed the pet the mushrooms to mutate it

For the simplest reproducible shopping list, bring three of one listed taming food rather than assuming a mixture of foods works identically. A wild normal Peccary first needs the same Pheromone-and-food taming process; mushrooms alone are not the initial taming step.

After taming or mutation, keep the Mushroom Peccary deployed or in a Small Pet Bed, Pet Bed or Luxury Pet Bed. It grows one Carbuncle Mushroom per five in-game days, collected through the Harvest prompt. This is the pet’s cycle, not the Mushroom Farm’s growth time.

Need a flask? Follow the two-flask chemistry batch. Do not spend the only skull you need for a farm on reagent production when a Carbuncle Mushroom supplies four Mycological doses.

Why is there no Harvest prompt on your pet?

Check that you are dealing with a tamed Mushroom Peccary, then check whether it is deployed or resting in a pet bed. Those are the conditions for growing produce. Carrying a packaged creature item and interacting with a deployed pet are different states.

An immediate missing prompt is not proof of failure: compare elapsed in-game days with the five-day cycle, and check deployment status. If that cycle passes without produce, record your version, settings and last harvest instead of killing the pet to troubleshoot.

If your immediate objective is cooking, compare other ways to obtain Carbuncle Mushrooms before changing your pet setup. A second source can meet a short-term need without destroying an existing pet.

Need a skull for the Mushroom Farm recipe?

The named skull comes from harvesting Mushroom Peccary remains. It is not an ordinary Peccary Skull, and collecting a mushroom from the living pet is not the skull-acquisition step.

Bring a weapon whose inventory tooltip lists Butchering, defeat a wild fungal Peccary and harvest its remains. The skull has a 50% harvest chance, so you may need several encounters. Check the item name after harvesting.

For repeated searching, check Labs and the Mycofields, including replacements during Spore Events. The Mycofields has heat and spore hazards: bring heat protection such as a Fire Proximity Suit and protection against airborne spores. Use the Labs objective route to establish access before setting out.

Check the farm recipe before heading out: you also need a military arm, Soil Bags and Hexwood. Gathering the entire checklist avoids returning with the correct skull but still being unable to craft the structure.

Follow the sixth-floor Mycofields access and return route for the trip itself.
