Abiotic Factor Carbuncle Mushroom: Where to Get & Farm It

Find Carbuncle Mushrooms from creatures or a Mushroom Farm, and distinguish harvesting a corpse from collecting a living pet’s produce.

Get your first mushrooms in the Mycofields

You do not need to build a Mushroom Farm first. For a normal exploration route, reach the Mycofields through Cascade Laboratories, then harvest the fungal creatures there. A spore event can bring Mushroom Peccaries into other areas, but this route does not depend on waiting for one.

  1. Follow the Labs route to the sixth-floor Mycofields portal. It explains the security reset, Tier 3 Keypad Hacker gate and Fire Proximity Suit preparation; merely entering Labs does not unlock the whole trip.
  2. Bring heat protection, spore protection, a weapon and a tool suitable for harvesting remains. The Mycofields’ heat and the creatures’ spores are different hazards.
  3. Look for a Mushroom Carbuncle or Mushroom Peccary during the climb. The Carbuncle is stationary and ejects spores; crouching avoids its approach-triggered attack . Do not stand up beside it assuming crouching made it harmless.
  4. Defeat the creature and harvest its remains; inspect the resulting item name for Carbuncle Mushroom, not Raw Carbuncle. Harvest a Mushroom Carbuncle for one mushroom or a Mushroom Peccary for five to six. Harvesting the remains is a separate step from defeating the creature.
  5. Continue upwards using the area’s jump pads to the exit at the top. The Labs return instructions also cover collecting Anteverse Gel during the same trip. Keep enough supplies to finish that return rather than treating the entry portal as an immediate shortcut home.

Search for the creatures as you climb; do not depend on a single spawn point. If you cannot yet open that portal, advance the linked Labs checkpoints; crafting an empty farm is not a prerequisite for this harvest.

Do not kill a tamed pet to collect its renewable produce. A corpse, a placed farm and a living pet are different systems; the farm’s water requirement does not apply to the pet.

This makes the first harvest a choice rather than a generic stockpile. Distilling your last three mushrooms prevents using those same items for mutation; having mushrooms in storage does not replace the farm’s skull.

For production planning, the production cycles differ: a container-fed farm consumes 750 ml tainted water for four mushrooms, while the living pet grows one over five in-game days. Do not use the pet’s growth cycle as the farm’s timer or compare speed from output quantities alone.

Avoid the name mix-up

Carbuncle Mushroom is not Raw Carbuncle. Check the item label in your inventory before spending a rare material on a recipe. Similar creature names do not make their drops interchangeable.

Do you need mushrooms to craft a Mushroom Farm?

No. The farm recipe uses a Mushroom Peccary Skull, a Human Arm (Military), Soil Bags and Hexwood, not Carbuncle Mushrooms. If you are collecting mushrooms only to unlock a farm, first check the actual recipe and missing-material checklist.

This is also why searching for the skull and searching for renewable mushrooms lead to different actions. A living pet’s produce should not be confused with harvesting creature remains for a skull.

What should you check before eating or storing them?

Eating one raw applies Spore Infection; stored mushrooms can decay into Rotten Food. Do not assume that something is safe to eat simply because it restores hunger. Confirm the named ingredient in the recipe you intend to make, rather than using a raw mushroom as a generic snack.

For cooking basics, continue to water and cooking. If you are building a reserve rather than cooking immediately, choose an acquisition method you can revisit and collect for a planned use.

What if your mushroom source is not producing?

For a placed farm, follow the water and lighting diagnosis, starting with the warning you can see. For a living pet, check deployment or bed status and its harvest interaction. Refilling tainted water is relevant to a farm; applying that rule to a pet mixes two systems.
